How I Communicate

Twitter, Facebook, Skype, phone calls, texts, e-mails, blogs, iContact, MSN, PowerPoint, Excel and lunch dates - that's how I communicate. Every single day.

I'm currently working as an intern at a Toronto-based website <www.notabletv.com> under the title 'Social Media Manager.' It's my job to make sure that the content of Notable TV reaches the masses. To do this, I use every single method of technology-based communication available to me. Sometimes I'll meet someone in person or make a phone call, but my most precious work happens behind a computer screen.

As soon as something new happens at NotableTV (a new video is posted or a major announcement is made, for example) I rush to Twitter. About 4100 people follow @NotableTV and have instant access to my tweet. That's 4100 people hearing my cybervoice in seconds! Good start.

Next, I jump on Facebook. I'll link whatever is new on my profile and as soon as I click 'share,' 800 friends know what's on my mind. I'll do the same on NotableTV's Facebook group and my manager's Facebook profile, which has almost 4000 friends. Combined, that's about 7000 people I can reach just buy posting a few links.

I also manage part of the company's newsletter, so I add anything I feel should be mentioned and send it out to a mailing list of 6000 subscribers every Thursday. Most of them are expecting a weekly newsletter, so this part of my communication schedule is critical. It takes a while because I know I only have once chance to get it right before I hit 'send,' and because writing in HTML is a major hassle.

When I'm presenting information to clients (Virgin, Astral, Holt Renfrew, Diesel, too name a few) I take advantage of Microsoft Student Office. In a variety of PowerPoint, Word and Excel combos, I produce complete media kits on behalf of the company and make sure CEO's of major potential investors are left with a professional impression of NotableTV.

If it's something really noteworthy, I'll blog about it. Sometimes the people we deal with are on the other side of the planet, so I make a phone call. Human interaction is also important, so I try to arrange as many in-person meetings as possible. I text my friends what's really important and occasionally post links on MSN. In one hour, I can reach over 20,000 people just by flexing my social media muscle and reach everyone on my extended network.

That's how I communicate.

Thanks for sharing this Adam. Interesting to learn about notabletv. Would also like to know how you communicate when you're just you :-)
